Your best bet is a PS2 - cheap and fun and a WII - it's getting the lion's share of the games for this generation.
A Wii and a PS2 are cheaper than a PS3 and have a great selection of games to choose from.
This is the combo most people are going with.
PS3: High Price, No Vibration Feedback, Few Games, Backward Combatability iffy......

I had to turn off the vibration on the PS2 as it's just annoying. On my 360 it adds to the feeling. It's just done better there.
