It is somewhat tricky. It should state on the game box if it supports progressive scan or not.
With this you could hook up a monitor without doing any conversion of a progressive scan signal - as far as I know, haven't tried that myself. I believe a good VGA box upscaler - or a PC with DScaler running is a better option, it'll support any game - but the signal quality will suck more or less, depending on the price tag of your upscaler.
