Many Europeans find casual appeals to knee-jerk patriotism at best hokey, at worst disturbing. We're not, on the whole, as comfortable with nationalistic symbols, outside of certain conventional contexts, as Americans are. It's a culture difference, not necessarily US-bashing.
Not to suggest that the two banners carry the same historical baggage, but how would you feel if Spider-Man was waving the Confederate flag about?
