It probably was obvious, but it still creeped me out, quite a bit.
Spoiler:The whole idea that she and the daughter thought they were safely returning home, yet were still unable to reconnect with the husband was better than I was expecting...I pretty much expected a typical horror movie "jump-out-and-scare-the-audience" ending, not one that was more subdued and quiet. I don't know, compared to other recent video game movies like, say, Alone in the Dark, House of the Dead, or Resident Evil, this just seemed more subtle.
Also, I thought it was pretty gutsy to leave them as dead, restless spirits...if the afterlife is where they were. Still not sure if it was the afterlife, or some kind of parallel existence. Most Hollywood films don't try to be as downbeat as that, especially when kids are involved.
