I am a huge fan of the Quest games but most of them do have a lot of ways to die, so if that's a big deal to you, you might not want to play those.

I suggest trying AGDI's remakes of King's Quest 1 and 2 to get a feel for what these games are like. Their KQ1 remake is exactly like the original (deaths included!), but they expanded KQ2 quite a bit to give it a more in-depth story. You can download both of these remakes for free from their website.
