Not really. It's just a nice expansion that adds four extra areas, quests, more options to gain XP, and some extra content. You can play Baldur's Gate II without having played the expansion of BG I.
The expansion of Baldur's Gate II, "Throne of Bhaal" is important though, as it concludes the story.
