The shortness didn't have anything to do with, I think it could have been longer. The foreign language wasn't off putting, because some of my favorite movies are in another language. I don't think the special effects played a role, because 2001 is one of my favorites of all time, and Tarkovsky did a good job with the abstract, liquid like fog to show Solaris.

Having seen Soderbergh's first may have played some role. Another thing was the lack of music. Sometimes I like the lack of music, but I think in this case it could have used a little more.
