Good question... It's been a long while since I've last seen the movie, and, as I said, the explanation was brief, so I can't help you.
Spoiler:I guess he might have killed both his employer and his wife because he suspected an affair between the two. Then he would black the murder out of his own mind, so that when he's told about the employer he would think that he had just learned it.
