That's not a good reason, then?

That's actually the sort of "mission statement" that turns me off when I read it, so it certainly wasn't behind the new design.

A number of people have commented on the new logo, also unfavourably, so I may have got it wrong. I was trying to create a "J" shape from the "sphere", but I don't think it's obvious enough. While I like the simple nature of the old logo, the colour scheme wasn't right and the text was a little squashed and looked as though it was fighting the design.

Yes.

You'll likely see elements of all of the above, mixed in with all my other influences from Calvin and Hobbes to Wallace and Gromit.
