The witch trial, although humorously presented, was a point-by-point recreation of many documented witch trials from that and subsequent periods, and people's unquestioning acceptance of the proof offered in those trials and the ensuing hysterical witch hunts have been attributed to widespread ergot poisoning (ergot is a fungus which attacks rye and other coarse grains, and it causes hallucinations when ingested in bread made from affected grain. LSD {lysergic acid diethylamide, or "acid"} is in fact an ergot extract.). Basically, people were acting crazy because they were tripping their asses off without realizing it.
