Don't let me dissuade you
You should get someone who actually lives down in Southern California give you advice on what to do there. I live up north and only really go down to LA for a few specific things each year, and other than the specific things I head there to do (eg the E3 expo), I don't really enjoy the surrounding area. It could just be because I don't know where to go
So yeah, ask someone else
