To this day, when the moon is dark, and the winds are still, strange things can be seen near the Cave of the Dark One. Forms and shapes of things that were once human still lurk in the vicinity, whispering in the night strange tales of a High Priest that did not die, but waits within the dark confines of the cavern, guarding a ritual that will someday again be used to summon the very shadows of darkness themselves. For is it not written, “In his vacation resort at Club Dead, Avoozl lies twitching”?

—From “Call of Avoozl and the Cult of Amon Tillado”, by P.H. Craftlove

One of the (many) things I love about the Quest for Glory series is how it manages to have its cake and eat it too. Whether the source material is Arabian Nights, Greek mythology or Lovecraft, the games manage to both be a hilarious parody of it and yet take the material seriously enough to get a strong emotional response from the player.  It’s a very, very thin line, and very few games successfully walk it (the best example besides QfG being probably the Ace Attorney series).

Bonus question (not than anyone ever answer those…): where was the name Amon Tillado taken from?

And yes, I know that there’s already been a QfG4 scene a couple of months ago, but (1) The Rules say that repeats are permitted during special series (and who am I to argue against The Rules?), and (2) I really couldn’t imagine a series on Lovecraftian games without QfG4.

I don’t know…perhaps from one of Edgar Alan Poe’s most famous stories (and a personal favourite) “the Cask of Amontillado”? If it is a tribute to the story, the wine itself or the place where it comes from, I do not know.

Need to play this series. Any opinion on which versions of QFG 1 (EGA vs. VGA) and QFG2 (EGA vs. fan remake) are better for first timers?

Rules schmules, post whatever scenes you like - repeats or not, as long as it’s not the same exact image ;-)

QFG 1 (EGA) Originally Known As Hero’s Quest is the Greatest but is is TextPhaser Controlled and i i think it Impossible to Find or even to Play Nowadays .
I watch this and i wonder how did i ever manage to Finish it

as for QFG 2 i Surely Advice to play the AGDI Fan Remake as it is well Crafted to avoid some the of the early irritating Common Issues of Sierra’s Adventures .

And you win! Amontillado is a variety of wine, made famous by the Poe story. In the game, it becomes the name of a character. The connection to Poe is tenuous, but there’s a “cask of Amon Tillado” in the monastery that gives you strange visions if you drink from it.

For QfG1, I’d say both have their pros and cons. It’s pretty much a straight remake, so the differences are mostly a question of EGA vs. VGA (the remake looks really, really good) and parser vs. mouse. The combat system is pretty different, but it’s awful in both cases. One thing that makes me like the original best is that they completely b0rked the conversation system in the remake, by giving you a list of all the possible subjects you can ask the characters. Which means you can ask them about things you’ve never heard about, which really breaks the immersion. In particular, there are two puzzles that involve figuring out that you must ask certain characters for a certain item; in the remake, you can just ask them for it before you even know you need the item. In any case, if you buy the series from GoG, you’ll get both versions, so you can try them out and make your decision yourself.

For QfG2, the remake is fantastic. It looks great, it plays great (and they didn’t break the logic of the conversation system). It adds a few extra elements: two magic games for mages, an extra quest for thieves, a combat side quest in the streets, and a secret boss fight (for masochists). The only possible drawback, I guess, is that the fighting system is more involved. In the original, a weak character can kill pretty much anything by just spamming the attack button. In the remake, the combat system is much better, but you really need to work on your skills, and to have some minimal dexterity in your fingers, if you don’t want to get killed. I think the new combat system is very fun in itself and makes the fights feel more dangerous, but if you just want to kill everything without having to go through the action and RPG elements, then maybe you’re better off playing the original (then again, if you can’t stand light action and RPG elements, you probably shouldn’t be playing QfG).

Thanks for the tips. I might start with the EGA for QFG1 then do the QFG2 remake. I played the first two games when I was younger with a friend, but I’ve never played them fully through (which is a sin considering I’ve played most of the other major Sierra titles).

Advie - the QFG series is $10 at GOG.com.

Funny, I got through the first one (EGA) all right, but couldn’t get into the second one because (I thought) of the combat. I suppose I should try again. Thanks for that. Smile

I’d recommend doing the opposite. The QFG1 VGA remake is great while the QFG2 remake (AGD) looks awful, with amateurish graphics and terrible portraits.
