Community Playthrough #29: Syberia

Welcome everyone to the Syberia AGCP!!! Smile

First of all, let’s spare a few lines on the game’s history, for those (very few) of you that haven’t heard of Syberia before.

Syberia was first released in 2002 and was followed two years later with a sequel. A third Syberia game is currently created. It was designed by Benoit Socal and developed by Microids. These names are almost synonymous with amazing graphic design. Syberia is no exception. It is a beautiful 3rd person P&C adventure game, which balances between realism and surrealism.

More specifically, it is the story of a young American lawyer, named Kate Walker, who is sent to a remote French village in order to finalize the take-over of a toy factory. Once at the village, Kate learns that the woman who owned the factory has just died, and she has a brother who must be contacted in order for the takeover to proceed. Her mission takes her across Central and Eastern Europe, facing many obstacles, but also making many friends!
However, Syberia is not only about exploration of the world. It is mostly an exploration of the soul, a journey into the unknown about life itself.
One of the most unique elements in Syberia is the automatons. Much influenced by steampunk culture, automatons are widespread in Kate’s journey, providing interesting riddles, while the function of each one of them is for the gamer a reward of its own. Either by being visually/acoustically awsome or simply by getting the story ahead with their very unique and way.

The game is of medium difficulty. Most experienced players should have no big difficulties in the grand majority of the riddles. Since it is easy to divide the game in 5 chapters, I believe that the playthough can be done in 5 weeks (1 chapter/week). However, despite not being difficult, the fact that these chapters are pretty long will provide full gaming experience even to those re-playing the game (who I suspect are a lot).

These first days will be spent in solving any technical difficulties, or simply give you time to obtain the game (if you don’t have it already). If we are all ready, we will begin the game in the 27th of August.

Whoever has the game installed and ready to go, please confirm it below. Also, please inform if this is your first time of the game or not.

Finally, the usual and necessary request to all participants to stay on-topic, use spoiler tags whenever needed and generally join in a good-heart spirit.

P.S: Pin the thread please.

P.S 2: I will personally play the game in the (awful compared to the pc version) Android version of the game, because I will be on vacation from 29th of August - 7th of September and I can only bring my tablet to Spain. Of course I will continue from my PC when I return home. Wink

I’m not surprised. Judging by this thread a lot of people haven’t played Syberia (at least not recently).
With this playthrough goes the last of the obscure games one could always use without failing to stumble everyone.

I though everybody and their dog had played Syberia at least once… At least now I don’t fell so bad about admitting that this is only my second playthrough of the game Wink

BTW: Installing it right no, so if I don’t say otherwise, just count me in as installed and ready to go.

I’ve played the beginning of the game for a couple of hours several years ago. Does that count for anything? Tongue

Good news is that I have appeared to have found the fault with my PC (Backup software locking the system up 20 - 30 times a day ).

If I hadn’t found the fault I was going to hook up an old PC in the repair area of my computer room and use the original CD to play along. Since my personal PC is viable to use I’ve purchased the game from GOG (along with The Black Mirror) for convenience.

I’ve played Syberia/S2 a number of times but not for a couple of years and as I enjoyed the PD play-through I thought I’d join in and play Syberia again.

I have played the game and still remember it fairly well, so I won’t be joining the playthrough.

I will however be watching the thread and might post something from time to time.

I still have mixed feelings about this game (at times I thought it was heart-touching/warming, and at other I thought it was just plain boring) but there was something that made this game hold a special place in my heart which I will mention once we get there. I might replay it some day to see if I like it more the next time…

Everything you need to know about me has already been told.

This is my first time playing the game as well.  I have the Mac OS X version which I had downloaded from Big Fish last year.  (They divided it into 3 separate downloads.)  I played about a half-hour of it just to make sure everything worked but then got side-tracked and never got back to it.  I’m happy to get going with it again.

Once I get my screenshot problems solved with the Casual Playthrough - Angelica Weaver, I’ll load it. If you don’t hear from me by Thursday, assume all is well.

I’ve played it a few times, but i’m on holiday for the next week with probably no WiFi so I may give the iPad version a go.

An adventure game is nothing more than a good story set with engaging puzzles that fit seamlessly in with the story and the characters, and looks and sounds beautiful.

So far we have Windows, Mac, iPad and Android. It will be interesting comparing the pros and cons of each version. Smile

I’ve loaded the Steam version and watched the opening sequence. I played Syberia soon after it released, and haven’t played it since, so I only have vague memories of the locations. I remember the main characters pretty well—they made an impression.

Locked and loaded. I’m playing the Nintendo DS version on a Dsi XL.

I myself wrote the DS walkthrough of the game and one of the few positive reviews of it.

This is my 7th time - 4 PC and 2 DS.

It appears that I am loaded. But I don’t remember having to “insert disc one” at the start of a session. That said, the game loaded and I made it through the first cinematic as the “other Tim” calls them. DX was a bit of a problem. Suppose I can delete the version when the game is done.
