Kurufinwe’s Top-10 Endings
#5 – Last Window

“And that’s the end, Mr Hyde. There is no more.”
— Margaret Patrice

Saving the world. Saving someone’s life. Bringing the bad guys to justice. Righting a wrong. Most games are about being a big damn hero. They’re about the players feeling that they’ve achieved something. And yet, simply getting to the end of the story can be its own reward, provided the story is strong enough.

One of my top-3 favourite writers is Kazuo Ishiguro and I’m always reminded of his books when I think about Last Window. They share a same muted, understated, contemplative tone. And ultimately they tell stories that are not about people achieving things, but just coming to terms with the past – and moving on.

Last Window’s ending is the perfect conclusion to the story. While it has its share of big reveals, it’s not really about cracking the mystery. It’s more about all those people who had been living under the same roof, weighed down by the past, finally letting the secrets out, and finding the strength to look to the future once all their stories have been told. Symbolically, the game ends with the promise of a new year and everyone moving out of the building that had held all those secrets, as it is going to be demolished. The scars will never go away, but they can finally move on with their lives.

It’s a tragedy that Cing closed down not long after Last Window was released. Rika Suzuki, its writer and designer, was one of the genre’s most talented and unique voices. I hope we’ll get to hear from her again outside Japan in the future.

Great game, arguably even better than its predecessor Hotel Dusk (although they’re very close together in terms of quality).
It really is a shame that Cing went under, they made some really great games (and I just loved their “vertical” book-like use of the DS)...

Great series, btw, Kuru! Can’t wait for the other endings you have lined up. Thumbs Up

The truth can’t hurt you, it’s just like the dark: it scares you witless but in time you see things clear and stark. - Elvis Costello
Maybe this time I can be strong, but since I know who I am, I’m probably wrong. Maybe this time I can go far, but thinking about where I’ve been ain’t helping me start. - Michael Kiwanuka
